Shivangi Ambardar

PhD Candidate
in Economics

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

I am a PhD candidate in economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), on the job market for positions beginning in Fall 2027.

I work in the economics of technological change, media economics, and economic history, with interests in innovation, firm behavior, and the emergence of economic institutions. I study how firms respond when new technologies arrive, how market structure shapes those responses, and how economic organizations take shape over time. A central part of my research is bringing historical data to life. I use AI tools to transform overlooked historical sources into original datasets, opening up new possibilities for studying economic questions that existing data may not be able to answer.

Before UIUC, I studied economics and mathematics at Beloit College in Wisconsin. Somewhere along the way, the Midwest became home.
